Mythic and Fairy Free Essays
The feeling of impending danger as the story progresses is created for the reader in Joyce Carol Oatesââ¬â¢ short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, through employing mythical elements to describe what is happening in the plot. Throughout the story, she uses several descriptions associated with the devil to serve as metaphors for the male character and what happens to Connie as also symbolic of the power of evil to tempt, conquer, and destroy the individual. Connie is the symbol of innocence. She is also pretty, obsessed with mirrors and fussing with her looks. She is very unlike her plain older sister. Like most pretty girls her age who want excitement and not be ââ¬Å"plain and steadyâ⬠like the sister, Connie is giggly and eager for new things, unaware that danger lurks ready to exploit the fantasies of girls like her. She is like innocent Red Riding Hood who thinks the woods are nice, cozy places to travel through unaware of the wolf that lives within. After describing Connie and her family, the author introduces the technique of incorporating mythic element in the story by describing the drive-in restaurant as a ââ¬Å"sacred building that loomed up out of the night to give them what haven and blessings they yearned forâ⬠¦the music wasâ⬠¦like music at a church serviceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ à The restaurant is a wholesome place for young people to meet and enjoy each otherââ¬â¢s company. However, once Connie gets out of the restaurant towards the parking lot, she is not safe anymore. The devil lurks just outside sacred places, ready to tempt anyone who gets out of the temple and who is willing to do something naughty and fun. It is outside where Connie sees Arnold Friend for the first time although they would not be introduced to each other then as Connie is with Eddie, a wholesome boy her age whom she meets in the ââ¬Å"sacredâ⬠restaurant. Right after that first meeting, the story begins its creepy quality as the author focuses on Arnold Friend and uses mythological and cultural associations with the devil to describe him.à One association is how Arnold Friend comes into the picture and how he looks like. His approach is announced by the ââ¬Å"glow of slow-pulsed joy that seemed to rise mysteriously out of the musicâ⬠which Connie was listening to at the time her parents and sister went to a barbecue party at her auntââ¬â¢s one weekend, leaving her alone in the house. Rock and roll music, songs that are fast and hard, is associated with rebellious teenagers. Arnold Friend appears to her with a rock song in the background and looking like a rock star himself, just like the men in Connieââ¬â¢s fantasy. He had ââ¬Å"fair brown hairâ⬠¦sideburns (that) gave him a fierce, embarrassed lookâ⬠¦wore sunglassesâ⬠¦tight faded jeans stuffed into black, scuffed boots, a belt that pulled his waist in and showed how lean he wasâ⬠¦the jaw and chin and cheeks slightly darkened because he hadnââ¬â¢t shavedâ⬠¦and the nose long and hawklike.â⬠His features are sharp, his attire scruffy, and his bearing is very manly. He appeals to her fantasy to look appealing to her, thus making it easier to achieve his purpose. However, the skin around his eyes, which she notices when he takes off his glasses, was ââ¬Å"like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light.â⬠The eyes themselves were ââ¬Å"like chips of broken glass that light in an amiable way.â⬠They were devilish eyes, bright and unlike normal human eyes. When he speaks, it is in ââ¬Å"a simple lilting voice, exactly as if he were reciting the words to a song.â⬠He constantly smiles, too. His name is Arnold Friend, an obvious pun on ââ¬Å"fiendâ⬠. He is obviously a bad guy with bad intentions but one who disguises them well. No other name is more trustworthy than one who has ââ¬Å"Friendâ⬠for a family name. Arnold rides a golden jalopy. The shiny car symbolizes how the temptations of evil always come in a dazzling and attractive package. Connie herself is amused and fascinated with the car. He uses signals and secret codes. When the car comes to a stop by the front door, ââ¬Å"the horn sounded four taps.â⬠Beside Arnold Friendââ¬â¢s car are more codes: the numbers 33, 19, and 17. He also tells Connie at one point during their conversation that he has a sign, the letter X. Superstition, with its preoccupation with codes, signs and numbers, is connected with the dark side. Another association is the suggestion that Arnold Friend knows everything about Connie and is even telepathic. When he calls Connie by name, she is surprised since she never introduced herself at any time before he drives into their doorstep. He knows the names of her family members, all her friends from school, and tells her that he can see what is happening at Aunt Tillieââ¬â¢s barbecue party at the very moment that he is talking to her. Connie, of course, realizes the danger she is in although it takes some time to sink in because at first she thinks she can just waive Arnold off and he would simply leave her alone. She knows the clues to the kind of brewing trouble she is facing with Arnold when she recognizes ââ¬Å"that sleepy dreamy smile that all the boys used to get across ideas they didnââ¬â¢t want to put into wordsâ⬠¦and the singsong way he talked, slightly mocking, kidding, but seriousâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She knows the game of temptation and she tries to resist as hard as she could. Later on in the conversation, however, when Connie continues to resist and especially when she threatens him with calling the police, Arnold slowly takes off the mask he has put on to seduce her with sweetness and becomes forceful. Evil cannot keep on its sweet face when it realizes how it is on the verge of defeat. When it cannot get its way through sweet talk and wheedling, it would resort to the use of force and violence. Connie also recognizes the shift and she feels real panic and fear. Arnold makes it clear to her when he says, ââ¬Å"the place where you came from ainââ¬â¢t there any more, and where you had in mind to go is cancelled out.â⬠Of course, Connie could have called her parents or the police and it could have frightened Arnold off and leave her. After all, she is inside the house while he is locked outside. He cannot go in and it would have taken him some time to break the door, long enough for Connie to make the call. But like the devil, he plays with her weakness, confusion and fear at the moment. Arnold controls himself, knowing that it would work better if Connie comes out of her own will. He continues to seduce her with promises of a pleasurable experience. He promises to bring her ââ¬Å"to a nice field, out in the country hereâ⬠where Arnold will ââ¬Å"have (his) arms tight around (her).â⬠He tries to convince her that she is better than any of her family members and only he can understand her and her needs best. Towards the end of the story, Arnold keeps coaxing until Connie feels she is not herself anymore. The author describes it as an incantation. She is lured and hypnotized by his words. She has become an observer watching herself ââ¬Å"put out her hand against the screenâ⬠¦push the door slowly openâ⬠¦moving out into the sunlight where Arnold Fiend waited.â⬠She has given up herself to the devil. She has fallen from grace. She will never be the same again. Using descriptive elements associated with the mythical creature called the devil proves to be an effective technique in developing the story because it adds that extra element of scariness in the reading. The reader associate what is happening in the story with the extra imageries and it intensifies the suspense and anticipation of the obviously tragic ending of the female character. Social development. Had a man not being a social animal and had he not interacted with other members of society, we would not have paid so much importance to clothes. We would use them only to protect ourselves from natural calamities. Clothing serves a social purpose for human beings just as food serves a health purpose for him. A properly dressed person attracts the attention of others towards him whereas a person who for one reason or other cannot dress up properly tries to avoid meeting and interacting with others. Thus his behaviour becomes unsocial. Decent and proper dressing is essential for social development. 4. Mental development. Clothing has a deep influence on human behaviour. A perà son who is not dressed according to prevalent fashion or season is mocked at. For example, a person wearing a woollen suit in summers would be a source of laughter. Clothes have a deep influence on adolescents. On one hand, they want to dress up fashionably while on the other hand, they are pressurized by famà ily values. If they do not dress up according to the latest fashion, they are mocked at and develop inferiority complex. This inferiority complex gradually transforms into problem in behaviour. Proper clothing inculcates a feeling of self-confidence and self control which are very essential for the all round personality develà opment. Clothes enhance our personality, in fact clothes makes a man. Clothes, more than any other factor adds to the development of overall personality. 5. Identification of man. The clothes of a person help others to recognise who he or she is. For example, we can easily identify the school of a child by his uniform. Similarly, nurses, doctors, advocates, solà diers-all have their distinctive uniform which defines their social role. Dressing reà flects the nationality, culture, character, etc. of the wearer. 6. Adds variety to life. Clothing adds variety to life and does away with monotony. Dressing makes a man fashionable. Dress designing is an art. Most accept what is told them by friends, the media and the government without question. Take for, instance, the calorie. Millions of Americans read the labels of food containers and worry endlessly about the number of calories that a food contains. This is a classic example of human ignorance. How can one worry about something and not know what it is, where it comes from, and what it does? Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã A French scientist, Antoine Lavoisier coined the term calorie, actually caloric, in the eighteenth century. Mr. Lavoiser observed that chemical reactions gave off heat. He believed that this heat was some form of fluid, much like water, that carried the heat away from the reaction. (Rothman, 69) Antoine was on the right track; he merely got on the wrong train. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Benjamin Thompson, also an eighteenth century scientist, observed that while drilling through brass with a dull bit he could produce enormous amounts of heat yet not get very deeply into the brass. This led Mr. Thompson to the conclusion that heat was the product of work, not the invisible fluid caloric. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Joseph Black, yet another scientist of the seventeen hundreds, discovered that it took different substances varying amounts of heat to raise one gram of a substance one degree Celsius. He called this specific heat. Mr. Black also noticed that when mercury at fifty degrees is mixed with equal amounts of water at zero degrees the resulting mixture would be only one degree. From this, he concluded that heat and temperature were not the same. In order to give the scientific world a standard of measure Mr. Black termed the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius a calorie. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The problem encountered here is that the calorie on food containers is not quite the same as Mr. Blacks. The calories referred to by the food and Drug Administration are actually kilocalories. That is one thousand times greater than those Mr. Black discovered. When Americans sit down to breakfast and eat a serving of Frosted Flakes, they are not ingesting one hundred sixty calories but one hundred sixty THOUSAND calories.

Product placement refers to the practice of including a brand name, product, package, signage or other trademark merchandise within a motion picture, television or other media vehicles for increasing the memorability of the brand and for instant recognition at the point of purchase. Product placements are commercial insertions within a particular media program intended to heighten the visibility of a brand, type of product or service. The common practice has been that advertising has been inserted within breaks, 30 seconds or 10 seconds commercial, but with increasing number of channels and media clutter, the target audience is not properly exposed to the message. The tendency of the audience is to change the channel whenever an advertisement appears. But by subtle placement of products in the settings of the Movie or a TV serial, the promotional message can be effectively put across the target audience These insertions are not meant to be commercial break ups rather an integral part of the medium so that the visibility of the brand increases. Attempts are made for the viewer to read the product or the brand as a quality of the characters using and approving it. Scripts are tailor made for the desired brand so that when they are incorporated they look natural. It is done through special mention in the programs, placement of logo or may be a shot of that particular brand. Movies have been used as the most popular platform for product placement. Showman Subhash Ghaiââ¬â¢s Yaadein showcased brands like Pass-pass and coca-cola. But recall the Rishi Kapoor starrer Karz by the filmmaker, which had an entire song sequence with the Emami banner at the backdrop. The celebrities endorse products and brands with commercial reasons,which normally comes in the breaks in television programs or in cinema halls. The phenomenon of zipping and change in the television usage behaviour due to surfing during commercial breaks has reduced the effectiveness of the television commercials. Similarly the commercials on cinema halls are found to be of low involvement as the audience takes them as blocks between the reasons of visiting the cinema hall and the time available to them for entertainment. So the brand communication and the entertainment products are viewed differently by the audience in both the media. Brand placement provides an opportunity where the involved audience gets exposure to the brands and products during the natural process of narration of the movie or television commercial. We have taken the issue of the movie as area of research because compared to television, movies are found to be of higher involvement. The audience can undertake multitude of working while observing the television program at a home setting which may affect the degree of attention span of the audience and hence reduce the over all effectiveness of the medium for enhancing brand memory. Quite contrast to this is the movie going behaviour where the audience makes a voluntary choice for viewing (exposure) at a cost (financial, time and opportunity cost) for the purpose of entertainment. Between an 8oz glass of orange juice to a 24oz can of soda, one person can drink between six to eighteen teaspoons of sugar. One may not think that a can of soda a day will hurt a person greatly; but that person is wrong. If you consume one non-diet soda, sugary sport or energy drink, even juice, it can increase your risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, even leading to chronic problems down the road. Even drinking a Five-Hour Energy or Monster in the morning everyday can lead to a caffeine related death. Keeping up homework, going to practice after school and maintaining a social life, a day being a teenager can be draining. We stay up late texting or studying for a test at the last minute, and sleep is not our number one priority. Yes, we wake up the next morning wishing we did not stay up so late, but there is always a cure for that. Almost one third of 12 to 24 year olds said they regularly down an energy drink in the morning. There is nothing wrong with consuming a Starbucks coffee or Five-Hour energy shot in the morning if it is the only thing that will keep us going. The sugar and caffeine in juice, energy drinks and coffee is one of the main factors that keep us teens moving at the pace we do. There are juices, diet sodas and energy drinks that have an okay amount of sugar and caffeine in them to where we could have one a day, and never be harmed. Causing people to eat and drink more. â⬠(Theiss) When someone has so much sugar in their system, it can lead to obesity and diabetes. It is shown that 25. 8 million Americans have diabetes (8% of population) and 191 million (2/3) are overweight/obese. (Gann) Not to say that a soda a day can lead to this, but when you are consuming mass amounts of sugar, you will become a part of that 25. 8 million. Men and women are both at risk for developing heart disease. Men who drink one sugar-sweetened beverage daily have a 20% higher risk of chronic heart disease then men who drink none. A study put on by the Harvard School of Public Health surveyed 43,000 men throughout 22 years, and results form 18,000 men were demographically similar. Results in American Heart Association journal stated: ââ¬Å"Drinking 12oz of regular soda, fruit drinks and other sugar sweetened beverages daily was associated with higher risk of heart disease. â⬠Dr. Frank Hu, Professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health said that the findings were notable. The same study was put on for a group of 89,000 women, and it was shown that women who drank one or less than two sugary drinks per day had a 23% increased risk of heart attack and it was four times as likely to have a chronic heart problem down the road. (Jaslow) Studying for tests, going out to parties, finishing research papers late into the night, maintaining a social life and working, life of a college student can be draining. Balancing everything usually takes a toll on one of our most critical bodily functions, sleep. So how do these college students wake up in the morning and go to class with energy? A study done by the University of Ohio stated that 74% of undergraduate students turn to energy supplements in the form of drinks or shots. A single Monster contains 14 teaspoons of sugar and a Five-Hour Energy contains over 8,000 percent of the daily-recommended intake of vitamin B12 and over 2,000 percent of vitamin B6. They say that the rush of energy one feels when consuming the drinks is due to the amount of sucralose, an artificial sweetener over 600 times sweeter than sugar and you will also see over 500 milligrams of caffeine in some drinks. So what happens to people who drink these energy drinks and Five-Hour Energy shots? According to Medicine Plus in 2007, almost 6,000 caffeine related deaths occurred in people under the age of 19, and since then, the numbers have continued to rise(Silva). When you come to thinking about drinking a nice cold 8oz soda, remember that you are putting a toxic drug into your body. You could one day have had too many sodas and be sitting at home with heart disease or diabetes. Remember not to over load yourself with a caffeine overloaded energy drink or shot. It also analyses demand and supply of labour and analyses demand and supply of goods. Economics is a science that studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses. It also the study of how men use limited resources in order to satisfy their unlimited wants and how human beings make choices to use scarce resources to satisfy QUESTION 1 1. Three basic economics problem and how the how the different economic systems solve the economic problems. There are three basic economics problem. The first one is ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢ which mean what to do produce due to limited resources that have and what should the economy produce in order to satisfy consumer wants. For example, a company want to produce laptop or hand phone which both have their own function or use to consumer or user which refer that maximises consumer satisfaction then the economy is allocatively efficient. Second one is ââ¬Ëhow willââ¬â¢ which mean the quantities to produce due the demand from consumer or user and due to the population with resources that available because it one of an economy achieves productive efficiency if it produces goods using the least resources possible. For example, many consumer or user want buy hand phone than laptop, so the company should produce hand phone more due the demand from consumer or user. Lastly, ââ¬Ëto whomââ¬â¢ which mean to distribution, depend on the distribution of income and depend on who want to pay or should the economy produce goods targeted towards those who have high incomes or those who have low incomes and what sort of demographic group should the goods in the economy that are produced be targeted toward. For example, consumer or users that are willing and be able to pay or buy the produce that they want. So, with if all three problems are addressed at any one time then the economy has achieved static efficiency. If the economy achieves static efficiency over a period of time then it is dynamically efficient. All these problems are focused around the problem of unlimited wants and limited resources which resources are the factors of production such as labour, capital, technology and land which are used to produce the products that satisfy the wants. There are also how the different economic systems solve the economic problems. Different societies have performed these economic functions, and sought to achieve technical and allocatively efficiency, in different ways. These ways can be classified as different economic systems. The first new economic system was Capitalism or the market system. However, early capitalism left many people in poverty, while competitive markets decayed into monopolies. In response, social reformers developed alternative economic systems. Fascism and Socialism attempted to fix capitalism with a dose of government participation. Communism simply sought to overthrow capitalism. It was a struggle between the invisible hand of free markets and the visible hand of the command (planned) economy. 2. Scarcity, choice and opportunity cost Scarcity refers to resources that are not enough meet all wants which it want always exceed limited resources to satisfy society. In other words, human beings have unlimited wants which there is never such a time that a human being is satisfied and not in need of anything. It also refer to the fundamental economic problem, and all economic activities revolve around trying to solve this problem and the other sides, a good which is usable but in abundant supply may not qualify to be called an economic good. For example, air and water are just ââ¬Ëgoodsââ¬â¢ in the sense that they are readily available and cannot be deemed to be scarce. Then, another concept in economics is that know as choice. Choice comes about as a result of scarcity, and in a way, choice is informed by these circumstances. Since human wants are unlimited and resources limited, it emerges that one cannot be able to practically meet all their wants at any one time and because of this, it becomes inevitable for someone to choose between the many unlimited wants which one o satisfy at any given moment. Since you make a choice of doing something, or fulfilling a certain want, it turns out that at any one time, there is a certain want that you have to ignore, or forego, in order to fulfil another want. For example, you were deciding to grow carrot or potatoes which one of them will become the option to be foregone. After that, the option that has been foregone is usually called an opportunity cost. Opportunity cost refers to second best alternative that has to forgone for another choice which give more satisfaction. For example, if you decide to grow carrots, your opportunity cost is the alternative crop that might have been grown instead potatoes. 3. Dinner vs. Instant Message I can remember sitting at my boyfriend's house, while he took part in Teen Chat , an online chatroom that he had recently become addicted to . He's being awful quiet and I am getting annoyed at the chronic pounding at the keyboard and the spontaneous giggles coming from him that pop out of nowhere. Here I am watching some dumb movie on HBO with his cat "Whiskey" coughing louder and louder until I finally get his attention. "Hey babe, you wanna type?" Did I want to type? No, I didn't want to type! You promised me Chilis! We were supposed to go out! "I guess,"I said. Anything to get some attention here. I wandered over to the damn machine to see what his fuss was about. Ok, I admit it, I was amazed that he could be a part of ten conversations at one time. There were about fifteen people in the chat room, talking about everything from sports to some stuff that I would like to think of myself too much of a lady to mention. "This is dumb, you WOULD want to be a part of this!" I said totally aggarvated that he could be subject to some of the things they were talking about. "Babe, WE'RE talking about baseball!" I guess he was right and I noticed that about five people acted as if they knew him before he even entered the chat room. I asked him how he knew these select few. "This is Ryan," he would say, "He is taking some of the same classes as me at CFCC, this girl's name is Jessica, she's from Tennessee, she just IM's me to talk sometimes." Wow. Friends online? Now this was starting to intrigue me. I mean how many of my friends could I communicate with? No phone bills or waiting three or four days to receive outdated letters. Now the meeting new people thing seemed a bit ridiculous, though he would beg to differ. But, whether I cared for it or not, there was a whole community online and he's meeting more people as I sit beside him holding Whiskey in my PJ's, watching the walls in his empty living room. He had always tried to get me to type on this thing and say hello. Finally, the next time, I did. "Say something," he would tell me. I wasn't surprised or disappointed to see that my simple "hello" was completely ignored.

In this section the IPLC is examined from the marketing perspective, and marketing implications for both innovators and initiators are discussed below. Stages and Characteristics There are five distinct stages (Stage 0 through Stage 4) in the IPLC. Table below shows the major characteristics of the IPLC stages, with the United States as the developer of the innovation in question.
