Children who suffer from chronic hunger also suffer physically, emotionally and socially. The effects of hunger impact a child’s ability to develop both cognitively and physically. If the child survives early childhood, these long-term effects will follow him or her their entire life. For 200 million children in the world, this is their reality. (Two Degrees Food, 2014) In many cases, hunger starts during pregnancy, before the child is even born. This inherited malnutrition increases the child’s risk for developing illnesses and learning problems when he or she starts school. Prenatal malnutrition can result in premature birth, low birth weight, smaller head size and lower brain weight. (American Psychological Association, 2015) From birth to three years of age, a child’s brain is developing rapidly. This is a crucial time period that is critically important for a child to develop not only cognitively, but also socially and emotionally as well. If the child does not receive the proper protein and nutrients during this growth period, it can cause deficits in the child’s development. Brain development is also impaired by vitamin deficiencies during this early childhood period. (American Psychological Association, 2015) A child who suffers from chronic hunger during this time period will most often develop mistrust and become stuck in this first stage of development according to Erikson’s Stages of development.
